Who is Marathon Sport?

Marathon Sport is a running store for runners by runners, whether you're just starting out or at an elite level. We only hire runners who know and test the products themselves. Our store staff covers everything from those who run three times a week to Olympic candidates with more than 100 km in their legs per week. In this way, we can also help all types of customers. Several of our team have a background in physiotherapy, sports or similar, but the most important common denominator is that everyone at Marathon Sport loves to run.

GUIDE FOR RUNNERS BY RUNNERS

The idea for Marathon Sport arose on a warm summer day in Frederiksberg Have in 1995. Per Søndergaard, the store's founder, had been training at a higher level at the Sparta club for a number of years and had become obsessed with testing running shoes and equipment.

That day in Frederiksberg Have, he floated the idea to his running buddy Lars about quitting his then job as a buyer for an American company and opening a store with love and expertise in running equipment. Lars was eager to join, and that same day the two friends cycled to Lars's house and started planning. There were many name suggestions, but after a short discussion, Marathon Sport was chosen. The dream of a store by runners for runners was born.

A LOCATION DEDICATED TO COPENHAGEN'S RUNNERS

Many family members and running friends advised the couple to drop the idea. The sports industry was tough, and there were many bidders, they said. But the two entrepreneurs stuck to their idea and signed the small store lease at Østerbrogade 19 in October 1995.

Per quit his job at the American company, and Lars continued working to maintain an income until the store could support two salaries. The two running gentlemen worked hard to get it renovated, purchased and ready for opening. On January 18, 1996, Marathon Sport opened its doors for the first time. The two gentlemen were dressed in matching white shirts with logos.

The day was a success, as more customers were able to see the idea of buying equipment in a running store founded by runners. The success led to the opening of the second store in 2000 in Frederiksberg and the relocation of the small store lease on Østerbrogade to a larger lease on the corner of the same street. Later in 2009, the lease on Frederiksberg moved to the location where the store is located today, Åboulevard 1. With a view of the lakes, Marathon Sports' two stores are located with Copenhagen's runners in mind, so guidance and new equipment are never further away than a pleasant run around the city's tranquil lakes.

A TAIL WIND FOR DANISH RUNNERS

Over time, Marathon Sport has branched out into the running world. Despite Lars choosing to withdraw from the project in 2000 in favor of a new job offer, Per managed to carry forward the concept of a quality running store.

For 20 years, Marathon Sport was the sponsor and supplier of starting numbers for all Sparta runners in collaboration with Nike. Over the years, several Danish elite runners have been supported by Marathon Sport.

The idea of Marathon Sport is and has always been to create joy for other runners – in their everyday lives, competitions and running dreams. Whether your goal is to complete a 5km or run under 3 hours at a marathon distance, running-committed employees are ready to help and guide you in one of our stores. We are passionate about passing on our joy for running.
